Location: Surfside, FL
The project is comprised of a 1929 historical private club, being fully renovated to include a restoration of its original architect’s Russell Pancoast’s design as well as a design for three new hotel towers.
The private club is known for it’s highly ornate, and authentically detailed and proportioned, Mediterranean style. The unique high beamed and vaulted ceilings, majestic colonnades and massive fireplaces are also well known features of the club. It’s immediate access to the beach and high standard service attracted various significant visitors including, Winston Churchill, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Elizabeth Taylor.
Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design has teamed up with Richard Meier and Partners to completely revitalize this historic structure. With the idea of history and contemporary ideas merging into one, KKAID and Meier and Partners have designed three new glass towers to juxtapose the old and new. Two of the towers extrude from within Pancoast’s original designs, causing a strong tension between the past and the present.
A notable detail in the project includes the evident work of old and new colliding. The new hotel tower emerges from a main historical courtyard, creating an indoor glass atrium with a breathtaking experience. The indoor atrium is open to residents and guests of the hotel and runs four stories high.
