Award-Winning Architect Kobi Karp Leads Renovation of Surf Club Four Season Hotel and Private Residences

Ultra-luxury project solidifies Surfside’s renaissance as top destination for elite international, domestic buyers seeking unique, top luxury real estate

MIAMIJanuary XX, 2017 – Noted architect Kobi Karp today announced the successful restoration of the iconic Surf Club Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences in Surfside, which is set to open in 2017.

The ultra-luxury project at 9011 Collins Avenue is one of several projects slated to open this year in Surfside, a beachside landmark located between The Village of Bal Harbour and Miami Beach. It signals the reemergence of Surfside as a destination coveted by sophisticated domestic and international elite buyers seeking unique, top luxury real estate.

The Surf Club, originally designed by renowned architect Russell Pancoast, was the darling of the rich and famous in the 1920s. Staying true to Pancoast’s original vision, Karp and the team were able to preserve and restore the property’s historic elements, removing modifications and additions that had been layered in over the decades. They also created several new crystalline glass additions and enhanced the building’s original splendor and functionality.

On the north end, they designed three white glass buildings – also known as “the three sugar cubes” – to create a visual elegance in line with the property’s history. The sugar cubes are set back diagonally to highlight and reveal the original historic Surf Club building. To the south, Karp relocated toward the beach the historic cabanas once frequented by figures like Winston Churchill, who famously created watercolor paintings there. Karp also introduced a floating glass cube over the historic courtyard at the heart of the property, creating innovative public spaces along the beachfront for The Four Seasons residents and guests.

The result: “A picturesque, curvilinear landscape all along the 900 linear feet of Atlantic Ocean beachfront, preserving history while embracing innovation,” said Karp, who is distinguished for providing award-winning, innovative design solutions for high-profile projects internationally and domestically for more than two decades.

Added Karp: “We are extremely honored to have been selected by Fort Development and the visionary Mr. Nadim Achi to bring the historic Surf Club back to all its glory. It is an immense privilege to be a part of the rich history of this iconic property and introduce this gem to the Four Seasons Luxury Resorts and Residences collection and an entirely new generation of visitors.”
