Hospitality Design: Kobi Karp to Renovate Hotel El Paso del Norte

January 06, 2017

Miami-based firm Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design will lead the renovation of the historic Hotel El Paso del Norte in Texas. Local firm In Situ Architecture will collaborate on the overhaul, which is slated to begin in March.

The redesign will feature local materials such as copper, brass, and deep burnished leathers to create a traditional atmosphere. Worn, rough wood finishes will offset the burnished metals alongside charcoal gray and deep brown tones of the red ochre colors that surround nearby Franklin Mountains.

“The unique vision of restoring and renovating this storied hotel in El Paso is inspired by the rich, historic architecture and material details of the 100-year-old hotel,” says Kobi Karp, the firm’s founder and principal. “Using the natural materials of white terracotta, red brick, natural vein stone marble, and deep 3D plaster reliefs as the inspiration for the cutting-edge interior design of the building.”

Renovations include the 365 guestrooms in addition the second-floor grand ballroom and conference rooms. The ballroom will serve as a prelude for the pool lounge area, which is surrounded by an upscale spa and gym. The bar next to the original 10th-floor rooftop terrace will be expanded to overlook panoramic mountain views. An ornate stained glass dome accented with plaster details will greet guests.

The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
